I recently read a blog post from a recruitment firm about the real costs of replacing lost employees and how to get better ROI from employment decisions. Our small business has been around for over 20 years and we’ve certainly made a few expensive employment decisions and felt the huge pain when hiccups occurred. It was interesting reading, and got me thinking…

Here’s 5 questions to keep a small business owner’s mind occupied…

• What is the real cost of NOT losing those employees who you should have separated from your business ages ago?
• How many employees are so burnt out, fatigued, stressed and disengaged because they are constantly having to meet escalating business productivity demands that they were “lost” ages ago even though they are still turning up for work?
• How do you make sure you lose the people you want to, at the right time, in the right way?
• Do you actually have an accurate, consistent and fair way to assess who is making the kind of contribution that meets your strategic business needs? (If you raise a fall-back position such as … “we rely on our Performance System to give us this” – then you would be one of the few organisations that give their system a positive rap! )
• Are you forward thinking enough to have a “launching pad” strategy that identifies the tipping point when your high performers will need to be encouraged to seek opportunities elsewhere if there’s no further career challenges you can offer?
